In the run up to this Saturday’s major Save Our Steel event, Sheffield Labour leaders have added their support to a letter being sent to the country’s largest construction companies, asking them to support the Charter for British Sustainable Steel.

Sheffield’s Labour Council was one of the first signatories of the Charter, and with it gaining pace council leaders have joined this latest call for business to add its support.

Councillor Leigh Bramall, deputy leader of Sheffield’s Labour Council, said: “We are proud to support the British steel industry.

“Stainless steel was discovered in Sheffield. People the world over link the name of Sheffield with steel.  British steel is also essential to Sheffield’s role in advanced manufacturing, which demands high levels of precision, quality and reliability.

The aim of the Charter is to secure jobs in the British steel sector, which employs approximately 20,000 people. It should also improve health and safety standards for construction workers.

Saturday 21 November sees a major Rally at Sheffield City Hall starting at 2pm organised by Unite the Union with national speakers. To find out more about the event visit their facebook page here.
