Lib_Dem_Budget_Meeting.jpgAs Sheffield’s Annual Council Budget is being decided, independent watchdogs have slammed Sheffield Liberal Dems alternative budget as irresponsible.  They’ve even taken the unprecedented step of advising councillors against the proposals put forward by the Lib Dems.

In a damning warning issued by both the Councils Chief Executive and Chief Finance Officer, it is stated that Lib Dems proposals, “simply defer identifying spending reductions for one year”.

Officers are concerned that by using “one off” funding Lib Dem proposals would lead to either greater cuts or council tax rises next year concluding “we would advise against it because it is likely to lead to an unsustainable future budget.”

Labour’s Finance Chief, Councillor Ben Curran said:

“This is a clear statement from independent council officers that the Lib Dems are incapable of managing the council’s finances and if they were in power they would be putting us at considerable risk of higher council tax rises in future years and more cuts to public services.

“I can’t ever remember the council’s independent accountants advising councillors against a party’s budget before, this just goes to show that the Liberal Democrats are now a laughing stock, they cannot be trusted to run Sheffield Council.

“We have all seen the damage that the Lib Dems did in government with the Tories over the past five years. What this shows is that at a local level they are so incompetent they cannot put forward proposals to meet the cuts they helped create when in government.”
