Labour in Sheffield continually work with partners to drive economic growth in the city, create jobs and tackle inequalities. It’s what we do. The Chancellor’s Comprehensive Spending Review was a chance to help us in our efforts.
Labour’s Deputy Leader on the Council, Cllr Leigh Bramall gives his view:
‘This was a chance to prioritise investment for the North and send a positive signal to investors that the Government is serious about making cities like Sheffield better-placed to fulfil their potential.
Sadly, the Spending Review delivers little that will help to rebalance the economy away from London and the South East, raising serious questions about the Government’s commitment to the northern economy.
The Government has cut our Council’s budget by £300m over the last five years, and we are expecting to have to find a further £50m from our budget for next year. We will continue to do our best to be a shield for the city by protecting services where we can, but the Government’s relentless cuts are making that increasingly difficult.
The Chancellor has talked a good game about the Northern Powerhouse over the last year, but building one will require more than just words.’
